April Message from Ainsley Carry to the VPS/AVPS Portfolio

by Ainsley Carry

This post was originally an email sent to VPS staff on April 29, 2021.

Last week, President Ono provided an update on UBC’s campus return plan for the 2021/22 Winter Session, and Dr. Bonnie Henry expressed her confidence that post-secondary institutions will be able to do so safely and successfully. While this is welcome news for the entire University community, I know it also comes with many questions.

First, I would like to acknowledge and recognize your dedication, resilience, and innovation as we continue to respond to the challenges that COVID-19 has presented. I want to express my deep appreciation of your continued commitment to care for, and provide an exceptional experience to our students and the UBC community. As we remain vigilant and adhere to Public Health Office guidelines, there is optimism as we see accelerated progress of the immunization campaign, and we are continuing to work closely with public health officials as we plan for a return to on-campus activity.

Recently an update regarding UBC’s approach to working remotely was shared as well as FAQ’s, which will help support our UBC community return to campus plans. Over the next several weeks and months, Dr. Samantha Reid, Executive Director, Office of the Vice President Students, and Keith Kawa, Director of Human Resources, will work closely with unit leaders to support planning for Winter Term 1 and return to on-campus activities. As we plan for Winter Term 1, the health and wellbeing of our community remains a top priority. Planning and implementation will be informed by public health guidelines as well as the new Go Forward Guidelines provided by the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training. I look forward to providing further updates as they become available.

Thank you again for your continued commitment to UBC. We are living through extraordinary circumstances. The stress and anxiety is real. Please take time to take care of yourself. I remain excited and hopeful for Winter Term 1 and I look forward to seeing everyone in the near future. In the meantime, I hope you and your family remain safe and well.
