Intercultural Sport Series

The Intercultural Sport Series supports our commitment to connection within and across campuses and campus communities.

About the work

Through the Student Strategic Plan, UBC is committed to providing student-focused and student-led activities that help create an unparalleled experience and build a strong sense of community. One of the ways is through the Intercultural sport Series at UBC Okanagan, a program that promotes inclusivity and connection through sport. Some activities featured cultural dances, Indigenous games and South and East Asian sport.

The Intercultural sport program is a series of cultural sport events that welcome domestic and international students to participate in and learn about intercultural sport. It emphasizes the importance of connecting students with their peers in other communities. The series is a collaboration between Recreation, Indigenous Programs and Services, the Global Engagement Office, and SUO Clubs and community partners.

The impact

The impact the Intercultural Sport Series has made so far:

  • 181 students have participated in the program so far and formed connections with their peers while engaging in various diverse activities.
  • Participating students had unique cultural experiences through engaging in various sporting events, Indigenous games, and cultural dances.
  • The Intercultural Sport Series provided students with social connections, improved well-being, and an opportunity to celebrate culture and sport.
  • Celebrating culture through sport empowers students to pursue cultural education in all areas while forming connections and enriching their overall well-being.

What people are saying

“The first year of implementing the Intercultural Sport Series was a huge success that we only hope to grow in partnerships and engagement in future years. This initiative was made possible through collaboration and forming strong relationships across many units and student groups.”
